Things In Bread
The Proposal
Things in Bread is an excellent Leeds-based sandwich shop who churn out stacked sarnies on a bustling city centre street. Their gourmet giving are crafted within a shop front that harnesses a minimalistic, modern design, and Tom, the mind behind it all (as well as amazing donut store, Doh’hut) commissioned me to create some daring and alternative ideas for a t-shirt to promote his business. The style he was after needed to contrast with the clean and crisp design styles present throughout the rest of the Things in Bread brand. Tom craved for a play on the business name, featuring a monster or creature, between two slices of bread…a Thing…in Bread.
The Artistic Style
I drafted a few pages of monster ideas, building on characters with cheeky charm and clear monstrous features, without making them appear too grotesque or horrific, as not to dissuade the appetite of prospective future customers. The design needed to be attractive and intriguing enough to pull attraction - enticing from a distance, and entertaining up close.
We settled upon an alternative word mark design for the front of the tee, with the main illustration reserved for the large back print, as a impactful form of reveal as the shirt wearer turns around to show it off. It would also catch attention from afar, luring onlookers to get closer for a better look.
After creating a selection of creatures and ghouls for selection, I settled upon a tentacular, quad-eyed terror with a smirking, gaping mouth, adorned with a pair of sneakers, striding proudly and holding aloft two slices of bread on either side.
I sandwiched the image between some distressed, bold type detailing the business name, as well as a concise address, to emphasise that this is in fact merchandise promoting this specific, sandwich-serving business.
This was another fun brief to work on, and if you’re in Leeds and craving a sublime sandwich, these guys offer genuinely great things… in bread.
