Muchatita
During my time at university, I created a short comic in collaboration with talented friend, Stephenson Ardern-Sodje.
It was for submission for the Observer/Faber Graphic Short Story Prize.
One of the few rules was that the story could only be four pages in length. Stephenson has heard a previous winner of the competition, during an interview, saying “You can’t write the end of the world in 4 pages”. Now, like a bull to a red rag, he saw this as a righteous challenge, and this became the backdrop for his story. Upon reading the script I found that this spectacular setting was not the main attraction. Conflict is always a surefire strategy to attract an audience, but a story that has tenderness and admirable character development would hopefully keep the audience wanting to read on, way past the limited page count provided.
Providing the imagery for this rich and scrappy little story was a pleasure, and, despite it’s slap dash presentation, I hope Stephenson’s story shines through.
"Muchachita" is a Spanish colloquialism for "Lassie" or "Young girl"
